36/365 – Another Selfie

Black and white, Photography, Portrait

Today I was asked to take some portrait shots of two colleagues for International Women’s day.  I’m always up for a challenge and thought it might be a good opportunity to practice some flash photography – I have little experience of working with flash.  I had a location in mind, that was airy and light but I wanted to use just a touch of fill in flash to add a bit of oomph.  Alas, under pressure, I couldn’t get the results I wanted, so I ended up using natural lighting.

I was quite pleased with the results and had intended to use one of the photographs as my photo of the day, however the people in question were somewhat reluctant, so I decided to do my own selfie back at home.  Gosh, I wish I knew more about lighting!  I sat in my bedroom for ages, bouncing the flash of all conceivable surfaces to avoid direct, harsh light.  What I really need is an off-camera flash set up – perhaps that’s my next investment…

  1. Great shot. It’s amazing how a photographer can turn something very simple into something so captivating. Thanks for sharing!
